Yesterday…

In 1972, Richard LeCleir founded a small tool and die company that became known as Sunrise Machine and Tool (SMT). Over the next three decades, the company would grow to become SMT Health Systems, Inc.

LeCleir was approached in 1988 by healthcare professionals who wanted him to design a lifting device that was safer and easier to use than those on the market at the time. He also developed the first battery-operated full-body patient lift in the United States. This prompted officials of a nursing home to ask him to design an electric sit-to-stand lift in 1991.

LeCleir’s innovations helped change the entire patient lift industry. The PAL (Professional Assistant Lift) line of products became the company’s primary growth segment. Our line of lifts and stands was renamed Volaro in 2003.

Today…

We continue to develop and offer new products, and recently enhanced our healthcare line with the addition of the revolutionary Rock-King rocking wheelchair.

…and Tomorrow
